In an exploratory clinical trial conducted at the Catholic University of Korea Incheon St. Mary's Hospital Brain Science Translational Research Institute, it was confirmed that transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) can improve brain function and cognitive ability in healthy adult men and women.
The study was conducted at the Catholic University of Korea Incheon St. Mary's Hospital Brain Science Translational Research Institute led by Professor Yong-An Jeong of the Department of Nuclear Medicine, and tDCS was performed on 5 healthy participants on both sides of the frontal lobe for 4 weeks.
As a result of the study, it was found that the resting cerebral blood flow (rCBF) in the right frontal lobe of the participants who received tDCS significantly improved, and no side effects were reported. The results of the study were published in the SCI journal ACTA RADIOLOGICA on the 6th.
Among them, Watson & Company announced that it is developing tDCS (transcranial direct current stimulation), which is mainly used for medical purposes in domestic hospitals, for public institutions and supplying Focus to domestic fire stations, public health centers, and dementia care centers, and plans to launch Focus_M, a tDCS 2.0 product for hospitals, at the end of 2023.
Professor Yong-an Jeong, the director of the Brain Science Intermediate Research Institute at Incheon St. Mary's Hospital of Catholic University of Korea, is actively researching the treatment of depression and dementia related to brain diseases by utilizing tDCS, Deep TMS, and ultrasound, which have been known as brain neuromodulation technologies in Korea since the beginning.
Meanwhile, Professor Yong-an Jeong, vice president of the Korean Society for Neuromodulation Therapy, said, "Through continuous cooperation with domestic and foreign electronic pharmaceutical companies and Watson & Company, we will develop more advanced tDCS and open new possibilities for dementia treatment."
